Juicy and generous flavors of ripe cherries and tart plums intermingle with delicate notes of earth and cedar. The wine is well-balanced wine with minerals and medium-firm tannins.
Established in 2009, Volcanes de Chile is owned by the Undurraga family. Carignan, Grenache, Mourvedre, Cabernet Sauvignon, Viognier, Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay are planted in four different vineyards ‒ located between the Coastal Mountains to the west and the Andes Mountains to the east. The 81 acre Cauquenes estate is planted on volcanic, iron rich soils to Carignan, Grenache, Mourvedre, Cabernet Sauvignon and Viognier. Lomas de Leyda is a 17 acre estate planted on igneous rock to Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay. The La Higuera estate in Alto Maipo and the Alhue Vineyard are planted on volcanic and glacial-alluvial soils to Cabernet Sauvignon, Carmenere, Syrah and Mourvedre. Additional fruit is sourced from local growers. Winemaker Maria del Pilar Diaz worked in New Zealand, France, Napa Valley and in Chile with renowned winemakers including Hernan Amenabar and Rafael Urrejola at Vina Undurraga before joining the team. She works closely with Gonzalo Henriquez, the winerys geologist, Agustin Aguerrea, terroir manager and Roberto Pinto, viticulturalist. The hand-picked grapes are sorted, destemmed, crushed and cold macerated prior to fermentation. The red wines are aged in combinations of new and neutral French and American oak.
