Wine Advocate 93 points - The 2008 Alfa Centauri Red Blend is composed of 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Cabernet Franc, and 15% Merlot aged for 18 months in new French oak. The Cabernet Sauvignon component was sourced from 100-year-old vines and the Cabernet Franc from 120-year-old vines. Purple in color, it surrenders an expressive bouquet of sandalwood, earthy minerals, dried herbs and spices, black currant, and blackberry. This sets the stage for a wine of exceptional volume, succulence, and length. It is likely to evolve for 4-5 years and offers a drinking window extending from 2017 to 2028. Founded in 2000 by Spanish entrepreneur Jose Manual Ortega Gil-Fournier, Bodegas y Vinedos O. Fournier is comprised of estate vineyards in Argentina’s Uco Valley, Chile’s Maule and San Antonio Valleys and Spain’s Ribera del Duero region. They produce a range of high quality wines from superior vineyard sites using a blend of traditional and modern technology. Chief Winemaker Jose Spisso oversees the winemaking for all three estates. O. Fournier produces four different levels of wine differentiated by their origins, aging regimens, styles and price points. The Urban range presents fresh, modern, fruit-driven wines aged in oak barrels for three months. The B Crux (Argentina), Centauri (Chile) and Spiga (Spain) wines are aged 12 months in new and first use barrels and 6-12 months in bottle. The Alfa Crux (Argentina), Alfa Centauri (Chile) and Alfa Spiga (Spain) wines are aged for approximately 18 months in new barrels and 12 months in bottle. The top tier wines, labeled simply as O. Fournier, are a special selection produced only in exceptional vintages and in very small quantities. O. Fournier selected the Lo Abarca, a sub-region of San Antonio Valley, to plant Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah and Pinot Noir. The 86 acre vineyard is currently planted to seven acres of Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir. O. Fournier sources additional Sauvignon Blanc from premium producers within Leyda Valley. In the Maule Valley, O. Fournier has long-term agreements with superior producers of the region to lease vineyards and purchase grapes. All of the vineyards range from 65-120 years old, making O. Fournier the only winery in the region producing wines exclusively from older vineyards. The 101 acre La Higuera Vineyard is planted on volcanic and alluvial soils to Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Carignan and Syrah with vines that are an average age of 80+ years old. Additional fruit is sourced from Linares and Loncomilla regions in the Maule Valley, planted to Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Carignan. |Cabernet Sauvignon (55%) and Cabernet Franc (30%) from vines averaging 110 years of age and Merlot (15%) were fermented for 15-25 days in stainless steel tanks. The wine was matured for 18 months in new French oak and bottled unfined and unfiltered.
