Since 1878, the Pike family has remained involved, in one facet or another with the alcohol business. It began when Henry Pike emigrated from the United Kingdom to South Adelaide Hills, South Australia and founded H. Pike & Co., a brewing business. Henry’s great grandson Edgar was a vigneron and vineyard manager for a large wine company. Edgar’s sons, Neil and Andrew are continuing their family tradition with Pikes Wines, Neil is chief winemaker and Andrew is the viticulturalist. The winemaking team is rounded out by Michael Harrold, vineyard supervisor and Steve Baraglia, winemaker. The estate is located on the eastern side of the Clare Valley in the cool climate of Polish Hill River. The 180 acre vineyard is planted on clay and slate with red and brown top soils. Most fruit is lightly crushed and destemmed prior to pressing or fermentation. The white wines are cold and heat stabilized prior to bottling. The red wines are matured in French oak for 12-18 months, fined and filtered only if necessary.
