The wine offers elements of ripe berries, stone fruits and dark florals, particularly violets. Pleasing hints of oak, earth and grass round out the palate and the finish is notable for its dusty, medium-firm tannins.

Valerio Vini is the oldest continuously run winery in Molise, Italy. The founder, Prince Giovanni Pignatelli built the cellar in Monteroduni and planted vineyards in 1972. Antonio Valerio bought the property in 2004 and embarked on a long-term restoration project, beginning with the vineyards. The estate is planted with Sangiovese, Montepulciano and an indigenous varietal, Tintilia. Antonio has retained the help of renowned wine consultant, Dr. Riccardo Catarella and along with the recent DOC Pentro designation, this winery and region is poised for growth.
Wine maker notes
From the Montepulciano grape purely vinified stands out Calidio, a red wine that distinguishes itself for its sharp and clean fragrance and also for its gentle taste. The name of this wine is derived from an incision on a Roman grave stone, which was found not far from where the wine is produced. The diligence, wisdom and engagement, together with the natural qualities of the area are the essential ingredients which give this wine an exceptional quality and a high consistency. Significantly, although still relatively young, this Calidio tells a story that attests to the presence of secular life in this lush and fertile land.

Technical notes
The vines were planted on medium-textured soils with a high percentage of clay and are, on average 15 years old. The fruit was vinified and aged in stainless steel.

Producer
The balance between traditions, research and application of advanced techniques make the Valerio winery a sort of factory motivated by the continues proposal of sophisticated technologies that don’t interfere with the knowledge of the terroir and the desire to recuperate the native vines. The company was born in 2004 with a young story, in reality enhances an old heart that ties up to the original company established in 1972 in the vines of Prince Giovanni Pignatelli, a family name since the XVII century in Monteroduni. The attention given to the old vines and to the territory, that time ago it had enjoyed the fame of the vines and its wines, it becomes the stimulus that animates the Valerio’s family first and then Antonio Valerio who will generate the recovery of the area of Macchia D’Isernia and the production of the wines which already represent an act of recognition by their names.
