Attractive aromas of oak spice and violets precede vivid redcurrant and damson flavors, framed by balanced acidity and supply tannins on a long, fresh and complex finish.
Wine Advocate 90 points - A blend 48% Syrah, 42% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Merlot and aged in oak for 15 months, the 2008 Anwilka has a glossy, well-defined bouquet that is rather taciturn at the moment. The palate is medium-bodied with a lactic entry: touches of dark chocolate and mocha at first, interwoven with blackberry and boysenberry fruit. The texture is a little “furry” but it is endowed with a satisfying, silky finish. Cellar this for 2-3 years and wait for those secondary flavours. Drink 2013-2020. (Aug 2011)
Anwilka is located in the Helderberg subregion of Stellenbosch, South Africa. The property was founded in the late 1990’s by Lowell Jooste, former co-owner of Klein Constantia, along with Hubert de Bouard de Laforest, owner of Chateau Angelus, and Bruno Prats, former owner of Chateau Cos d’Estournel. In 2012 the property merged with Klein Constantia, with Laforest and Prats remaining as partners. The 98 acre property is located four miles from the South Atlantic Ocean. The maritime influence helps to preserve the natural acidity of the grapes over an extended growing season. Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz and Merlot are planted on gentle slopes of well-draining, iron-rich soil. The yields are managed by rigorous pruning and green harvesting. Piet Neethling manages the vineyards and Jean du Plessis makes the wines. The grapes are hand-picked, sorted before destemming, and sorted again prior to crushing. Stainless steel tronconic fermentors are gravity fed, and the wine is pumped over and undergoes extended post-fermentation maceration. Anwilka has since established a worldwide reputation for its red blends which have been described by Robert Parker as “the finest red wine I have ever had from South Africa”.

|A deep ruby edged with a youthful ruby rim, the presents enticing notes of oak spice and violets. On the palate are vivid flavors of redcurrant, and damson, framed by supple tannins, and carried by a fine thread of acidity. The finish is long, fresh and complex.
