Vinous 91 points - Complex aromas of gooseberry and wild herbs, plus a whiff of mulberry. Blackcurrant and honey on the palate, with the wine’s depth and richness (residual sweetness?) held in check by a firm spine of acidity. Minerals and lemon linger on the finish.  (Dec 2013)

Wine maker notes
Wachtum means “Growth” or “Cru”. These young vines represent a nursery of sorts. Starting in 2000, Toni has assiduously collected and planted here over 100 different clones of Gruner Veltliner and with 2007 released the first wine from this site. The idea is to demonstrate a vibrant expression of the variety and also to protect and preserve the biodiversity of the grape variety. To further enhance the singular character of this wine the vineyard is planted to reclaimed terraces that had overgrown with forest due to decades of neglect, located at the very top of the Achleiten hillside.

Producer
In 1983, the now retired Franz Prager, cofounded the Vinea Wachau association, an organization dedicated to preserving the quality and culture of Wachau wines, while promoting Wachau”s image beyond Austrian borders. The marriage of Vienna-born Toni Bodenstein, to Franz”s daughter, Ilse, ushered in a sweeping renaissance at the Prager winery. These changes not only affected the way Prager thought, but also how Wachauers thought about their vineyards and their work as winemakers.
