Lorenz Peterson, a Dutch-born shipbuilder from San Francisco, was our estate’s founder. He lost his entire savings in the Bank Panic of 1873, except for $2,000 he had not deposited. He used that sum to purchase the property. Clearing the land himself, he built a family home and planted the original vineyard to Zinfandel, Alicante Bouche, Carignan, and Malvasia. In a few short years Lorenz had become skilled in farming the estate’s vineyards, crafting its wine, and marketing its production. He was a vineyardist.
Lorenz sold his wine to brokers in San Francisco in an annual auction held around his kitchen table in the family’s house. The auctions lasted until Prohibition when the vines were converted to prunes and walnuts.
In 2000, after a decade-long search, we acquired the estate, completed the restoration of the 130 year-old Victorian home and replanted the original vineyards to Cabernet Sauvignon. Construction of The Vineyardist winery is currently underway.
