Montevina Winery has grown and vinified world-class Barbera in the Sierra Foothills of Amador County since 1974 and is widely acknowledged as among California's elite producers of this classic Piedmontese varietal. We outdid ourselves with this one! Amador County's hillside vines, warm days, cool nights, and well drained decomposed granite soils create ideal conditions for the production of superlative Barbera. Here at Montevina, we farm our Barbera nearly entirely organically and focus on managing crop levels which results in extra concentrated flavors.
Wine maker notes
Terra d’Oro Barbera was fermented in stainless steel for a full two weeks, extracting maximum color and flavor. At Terra d’Oro, we believe that barrel aging is essential to making Barbera. For this vintage, French and Hungarian oak barrels were used in a truly international oak program. Aging in small oak barrels gently integrates toasty oak aromas and flavors with the rich, juicy fruit. This process takes time, 15 months in this case, but the seamless transition from fruit to oak is a worthy prize.
