In 1918, Mr. Modesto Guell Coll arrived in Chile from Tarragona, Spain. He came to this country to follow the footsteps of his predecessors, all dedicated to wine production on their land.
His business acumen allowed him to buy his first farm lands in the Rock located 15 km south of Santiago. Today that area is now part of Greater Santiago.
In 1942 Don Modesto sold Guell The Rock and very commercial outlook bought the farm La Fortuna located 200 km south of Santiago, planting it at the time with fine strains such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec and Sauvignon Blanc.
By this time, his son Daniel Guell Galofre is incorporated to help his father to continue the family tradition, producing better and better wines. Anticipating what the market would demand, Daniel Guell planted different varieties of grapes and concentrated on improving systems of crop and fruit quality. In those years the wine is sold primarily in bulk to large vineyards. Again the vision led them to build, in the late 1940s, the current warehouse of 6,500 m2, which currently has 16 concrete vats epoxicated 55,000 liters each, 80 tanks of 30,000 liters each rauli one, 45 stainless steel tanks with 1.2 million liters and an automatic bottling line 2,000 bottles per hour.
Thus La Fortuna wines have been on the market since 1950. Today, the third generation of Guell, directed by Fr Daniel Galofre Guell, his son Luis Daniel Guell Borland, Jose Tomas Infante grandchildren and Macarena Concha Guell Guell, continue to produce wines with the same dedication and passion as their predecessors. The old winery, located in the Maule Region, Lontue Valley area, has become these days in a modern facility with all the necessary elements to produce high quality wines that markets demand. Stainless steel tanks, pneumatic presses, temperature control and French oak barrels for aging premium wines, have been incorporated into the cellars of La Fortuna.
