The power and character of this exceptional knight,one of Scotland`s heroes is, we believe, reflected in this dark ruby, traditional ale which bears his name. Medium-bodied, with a subtle hop aroma, on the palate this luxurious beer has a deep, full flavor which balances a toasty maltiness, mild bitterness, and a hint of sweet herbs. It finishes clean and mostly dry, but with a faintly subtle sweetness.

Sir James Douglas, known as Black Douglas and the Good Sir James, was the trusted friend of Robert the Bruce, joining him in the war for independence against England. Douglas` exploits made him the terror of the Border Country of Scotland, where Black Douglas™ Ale is brewed by Broughton Ales, Ltd. In 1327 Douglas succeeded in ending the English campaign. At The Bruce`s deathbed, shortly thereafter, he promised to take the king`s heart to the Crusades and fight for the cause. This he did, but died in battle in Spain helping the Spanish king fight the Moors.

Technical notes

Best served at 50-55°F, this "eighty-shilling" ale is very quaffable on its own, and pairs nicely with a wide range of food, to complement or contrast. Available in 12 bottle cases of half-liter bottles. Original gravity - 1053; international bitterness units - 25-30; 4.1% abw; 5.2% abv; shelf life - at least 18 months at 55-60°F.
