For those who can remember the ’95 vintage, this vintage is closest to that. This current wine is the most precocious yet. Bacio is very fruit forward, explodes on the palate with congenial berry fruit, yet slides away with a balance that rewards with long and lasting sweetness. Bacio is aromatic with ripe fruit, and is delightfully sweet and balanced.
Wine Spectator 91 points - A remarkably complex and successful blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Sangiovese and Petite Sirah. Offers a wonderful range of flavors, from the core of currant and blackberry to hints of cedar, sage, anise and nutmeg. Tightly wound and firmly tannic, with a long, intricate finish. Needs short-term cellaring. Best from 2006 through 2012. 1,548 cases made. –JL  (Jul 31 2005)

Wine Advocate 89 points - The deep ruby-hued 2002 Proprietary Red, a blend of 66% Cabernet Sauvignon, 19% Sangiovese, and 15% Petite Sirah, reveals a sweet perfume of white chocolate, kirsch, licorice, earth, and dried herbs. There is an elegant attack as well as medium-bodied, concentrated flavors, but an angular, austere, tannic finish kept my score from going even higher. I suspect this offering will taste better if drunk with food. Consume it over the next 7-8 years.  (Feb 2005)

A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Sangiovese and Petit Sirah. Our primary Cabernet Sauvignon vineyards are in the Rutherford appellation. The Sangiovese comes from a high elevation vineyard in Atlas Peak , and our Petit Sirah vineyard is located just north of Calistoga. All fruit and wines are Napa appellation.

Unlike wines that typify a certain terroir, our wines are blends in the classic sense. We choose the most expressive barrels of each varietal and utilize the ‘art’ of blending to produce a final wine that is superior to each of its components.

The wine is deeply Cabernet colored, complex and layered in blackberry and current fruit. The intriguing Sangiovese varietal adds linear tannins and an indigenous fruitiness. The Petit Sirah adds a firm structural backbone and a fresh, bright acidity to the wine. Overall, Bacio Divino is balanced, precocious in its youth, generous in flavor and aroma, yet retains an elegance not always found in California wines.

Technical notes
Our Cabernet Sauvignon comes from 7 various vineyards, including world-class vineyards such as ‘To-Kalon Vineyard’ in Oakville, ‘Georges Latour III Vineyard’ in Rutherford, and our own ‘Estate Vineyard’ in Dutch Henry Canyon near Howell Mountain. The Sangiovese comes from a high elevation vineyard in Atlas Peak, and a hillside vineyard in the heart of the Oakville appellation. The Petit Sirah vineyard is located just north of Calistoga. All fruit and wines are Napa appellation.

Producer
We live where we work, on the sunny and vine-dappled peaks of Napa Valley, overlooking the town of St. Helena. Possessed of naked idealism and fierce, if cloudy, ambitions, we undertook in 1993 to etch out our own signature wine. We envisioned something that, like Sir Lawrence Olivier or Kate Hepburn, could make an impression both immediate and lasting. A wine of unmistakable co-authorship: terroir by Napa Valley, style by cloudy-headed winemaker. And, (because we’re really not all that self-serious) a wine with a twinkle in its eye, promising equal parts mystery and mischief. And so we came up with two wines, each a proprietary blend. First and foremost, Bacio Divino, a divine kiss of predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon, with the added dimensions of Sangiovese and Petite Sirah. And then, in 1999, Bacio Divino’s vivacious kid sister Pazzo: Sangiovese-centric with undercurrents of Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Zinfandel (on occasion), Merlot and (can you believe) Viognier. A dozen vintages into our small family-run venture, we are immensely proud of our wines, humbled by the acclaim and yet still as restless as ever. Thus, in 2006 we released a third blend: the elaborate, brooding Vagabond, Syrah’s chance to star with Cabernet in a support role. And a year later, having found our voice through blending, we set out to express that same voice through a single varietal. The 2004 Janzen Estate ”To Kalon Vineyard” and 2004 Janzen Estate ”Cloudy’s Vineyard” single-vineyard Cabernet Sauvignons are luscious, terroir-driven exemplars of Napa’s noble grape. Our devotion to Cabernet and to blending will soon coalesce into yet another proprietary red: the Janzen Estate Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, an exquisite melange of the best Cabernet lots from among our 11 Napa Valley vineyards. A lot of thought, heart and labor went into the making of these wines. Enjoying them will, we hope, prove effortless.
